outside Athens, 480 BC
The Acropolis is burning.
It is night now, and the glow is turning the clouds above red. A nice red, really, glowing hot even from here, and fading into a dull red. The screams had stopped hours ago (all gone now) and now there is nothing but silence.
(burn, burn, burn the scene of the crime)
At least, from where Medusa is. She is sitting on a rock on a hill a little distance away, hugging her knees to her chest. She's been watching for hours, but the smile on her face is still as bright and guileless as the flames.
(burn, burn, burn away the memories)
(burn, burn, burn it down)

His voice is sharp and warning and he finally turns to look at her with dark, stormy eyes of his own.
There's another rumble of thunder in the distance.

Medusa's eyes drop and her wings are refurled against her back.
"Yess, ssir."

Kronos, Kronos, if I ever see you again --
The thought makes him clench his own fists for a second.
Rather than reprimand her, he places an arm around her shoulders.

"Replacesss it. Just fire, fire, fire, nothing else." Her voice is muffled and oddly miserable.

He can smell the blood and ash on her.

"Gorgon? Daemon. Monster. I can't."
no subject
"If you could..."
He trails off, looking back out toward the Acropolis.
"What will they do now?"
no subject
"Pursue, I guessss. Hunters and prey, but it's about pride, hmm? Itty-bitty backwaters cannot tell the Great King NO. No, no, no, they can't. It is a Lie, and thus Wrong and...
Pride.
And then rebuild from the rubble, maybe the same, maybe different. Depends who wins."
no subject
"And what will you do?"
no subject
"Fly. Up is up and down is down."
no subject
no subject
"No."

He's eyeing her skeptically, now, eyes grey and narrow.

"Yes."

After a moment of silence, he offers her a hand.
"Walk with me?"

He doesn't let her stop until the red clouds are far out of sight.

It's all fire now. Memories of hands and broken bones and being-Nothing but the crackle and heat of fire, fire, fire.
So Medusa's smiling, a little.
no subject
"Sit, Medusa."

Still.
She's watching him.

"You don't touch."

She noticed.
no subject
"No need."

"It's good for your humility."
no subject
"She won't be happy, you know," he says, indicating the ground below. "They're scorching her soil."

"Hm?"

I will singe and blacken all that grows from you --
Something dark passes over his features, but it only lasts for a second.
-- and you will regret the day you bore me.
"Natural, not manmade."

For both of us.

Different voices in her head, low and male and she trusts them. Trust them, trusts them, trusts them so the Gorgon nods and doesn't move away until the trees have stopped pulling faces.
